Engine Power Ratings

One number per club, moving after every game. It rises with wins, rises faster with big wins over good opposition, and falls for the reverse. Home field and rest are handled separately at the point of prediction, so this is a neutral-site measure of strength. Every prediction on this site starts here.

The From 2025 column is the between-season regression, not form: every club is pulled a third of the way toward 1500, so strong teams show a fall and weak ones a rise. It's there to make the adjustment visible rather than something you take on trust.

How The Rating Works

It's an Elo system, the same family used for chess ratings, adapted for American football. Every club starts at 1500. After each game the winner takes points from the loser; how many depends on the margin and on how the result compared to expectation. Beating a much stronger side by a wide margin moves the number a long way; a narrow win over a weak side barely moves it at all.

Twenty-five rating points equal roughly one point of expected margin on the field. So a club rated 1600 against one rated 1500 projects to win by about four on neutral ground. Home advantage adds a further 1.4 points β€” a figure we measured against 27 seasons of results rather than assuming, and notably smaller than the three points the sport traditionally quotes.

Between seasons every club is pulled a third of the way back toward 1500, because team strength carries over only partially year to year. That's why the table above looks compressed compared with where clubs finished.
